Canvas tote bag, made to order

Tote bag, made to your specification rather than pulled from a stock list. The body is cut and sewn in our own workshop in Cangnan, so the pattern carries your dimensions, your colour and your closure instead of a catalogue default. Edges are folded and stitched rather than cut raw, and the base is reinforced where the load sits, which is the difference between a bag that lasts a season and one that lasts a year.

Material and construction

The shell is cotton canvas, a heavier plain weave with enough body that the bag stands on its own when it is set down. Weight runs from 8oz for a light tote up to 16oz where the bag has to carry tins, tools or bottles.

Canvas is normally screen printed or embroidered; both sit well on the heavier yarn and neither stiffens the fabric.

Binding runs the full length of every inside seam, and the base is a separate panel rather than a folded continuation of the front, which is what keeps a full bag square.

Printing and branding

Most of these bags leave the floor with a one or two colour screen print, because it reads at arm's length and costs least to set up. Foil, deboss and a woven label are the other three routes, and each has a fibre it prefers: foil on satin, deboss on velvet, a label on anything coarsely woven.

We print to a Pantone reference rather than to what a monitor shows, and we send a digital mockup on the bag shape so the size can be judged before tooling. Quotations are built line by line, so the cost of the bag, the print and the packing can each be read on its own.

Size, colour and small changes

Sizes are made to your dimensions rather than picked from a list. If you have the object the bag has to hold, send its measurements and we will work out the allowance; if you have a drawing already, we cut to it. Carton dimensions are agreed with the order, because the packed size decides the freight cost.

Fabric colour, print colour, thread colour and hardware finish are specified separately, which is what makes a repeat order repeatable. Hardware, lining and thread are chosen against a physical swatch rather than a screen, which removes most of the surprises.

Packing, checks and shipping

Checks run at three points: on the cut panels, on the assembled bag, and on the packed carton. The reference is the sample you approved, so anything that drifts is caught before it is boxed. Sampling runs once artwork and specification are agreed, and the signed sample becomes the document the whole run is measured against.

Cartons are counted and marked before they leave the floor, and the packing list is sent ahead of dispatch so your warehouse knows what is arriving. Consolidated shipments can combine this line with other bags on the same order, which keeps the freight per carton down.
