Recycled PET still costs more than virgin in 2026 — budget for it properly
Recyclate prices came under pressure through 2026, but rPET has not fallen to virgin PET levels. Buyers who want a recycled claim should price it as a separate line, not as a discount.
Every recycled-content conversation eventually reaches the same question: why does the recycled version cost more? In 2026 the answer is still the market, not the supplier. Recycled PET has traded at a premium to virgin resin through the year, and the spread has not closed.
What the price data shows
Through the middle of 2026, recyclate markets were soft. OPIS assessments reported at the end of June put rPET flakes at EUR 1,331 to 1,341 per tonne and rPET pellets at EUR 1,718 to 1,728 per tonne, with every recycled polymer under pressure from weak demand. By the third quarter, IMARC Group was reporting rPET at roughly USD 983 per tonne in the USA, USD 984 in Germany and USD 741 in China.
Compare that with virgin PET, which a 2026 packaging case study put at USD 0.55 to 0.75 per pound against USD 0.65 to 0.90 for rPET. Per tonne that is a material difference, and it is the difference a buyer is asked to absorb when they choose a recycled fabric.
Why this matters for bags more than bottles
A bottle maker buying rPET is buying resin. A bag factory buying recycled fabric is buying yarn that has already been through spinning, weaving and finishing, each step carrying its own recycled premium. On a 210T RPET shopping bag the fabric is a large share of the unit cost, so the recycled decision is visible in the price in a way it is not on a rigid pack.
How to budget for it honestly
- Price the recycled option as its own line. Do not average it into a single price and hope the mix absorbs it.
- Know which claim you are buying. Post-consumer recycled content, pre-consumer waste and "recyclable" are three different claims with three different costs.
- Match the material to the use. A 190T to 210T RPET foldable bag is the cheapest credible recycled carrier; a 10 oz recycled canvas tote is a different product at a different price.
